I don’t think it gets talked about much, but the voice acting in the Souls games is really great. That “Die! Die! Die!” That Devin says could’ve been generic screaming but the VA turned into a much more menacing threat, like an executioner raising the axe. Really drives the fanaticism home

    • Maverick Titan
      Maverick Titan Month ago +7

Elden Ring's English language voice cast is an enormous step up from mediocrity of FromSoft's earlier localizations. I still wonder if the VAs for Darksouls 1 even had access to proper microphones.

@Maverick Titan Idk wtf you're on about lmao. There was never any English "localization" for the voice acting. It's always been in English. FromSoft has used the same VA agency for nearly their entire Souls catalogue, and it's always been outstanding in every entry.

To tell the truth, though I know Ranni's ending will be the last ending explained, I would still love to see Goldmask's storyline and the Golden Order Fundamentalists rendered in Prepare to Cry.
Brother Corhyn's blind faith and Goldmask's struggle against a Golden Order that won't change until his death both come together to tell a tragic story.

X-vid videos are just faster. If you decide to spend time going through item descriptions and NPC dialogue, you'd be able to piece it together yourself. it just takes time, but if you don't have that time or just have things you'd rather spend your time on, that's why X-vid videos exist.

      cdp124 Month ago +20

@Hevno think about it from the perspective of the tarnished: guy wearing a former friend's armor shows up and kills the woman that had helped you realize the plight of those that live in death, as well as being a companion to you all game.

    • Nines :3
      Nines :3 Month ago +23

@Hevno D twins are fanatics, they were rejected by all but golden order so they defend the views of golden order like fanatics would by executions and crucifixions.
People who live in death are not even bad, they were simple villagers or nobles that were burried in the roots of the tree, hoping to be reincarnated one day, it's not their fault that the tree roots were corrupted by Godwyn's corpse.
Fault lies with Golden order taking the rune of death out of the Elden Ring, meanwhile D brothers see people who can't die and blame them instead of the order that caused them to exist in the first place.

    • Hevno
      Hevno Month ago +11

      @Nines :3
the ppl were already living and reincarnating without an issue even after the rune of death was removed, like you said it is not their fault that they were corrupted by poor godwyns death roots, but it is also not godwyns fault nor the golden order, if you want to blame someone for why they came to be it would be the vile wench ranni for doing what she did and causing all this torment.
Those living in death are unnatural they are not living yet they are not dead their existence is simply Pain (I am very sure those wandering skeletons are not happy).
Since they can no longer reincarnat through the erdtree the golden order seem to just want to put them down and give them a true death.
That is why I defend the twins unless you and the undead all across the land were happily making love to each other I am sure you noticed all of them (save for fia) are aggressive and dangerous and the twins and those like them work to put an end to the damage caused by ranni

I wish this game let you have real effects on game play from which side you pick like what was shown around 35:00 by siding with those of living death you had them come out of sources of it to aid you and maybe you spread it as you went on etc.

    • Han Solo (but I'm dead)
Han Solo (but I'm dead) 2 months ago +21

@Roman von ungern-sternberg I understand why you'd want an in-game effect, but as a matter-of-fact, this is an RPG. It lets you have fun making a build and stylizing it with a story. Yes, having the dead enemies not attack you much later in the game as you align yourself with them is interesting, but it would make the gameplay restricting. You're supposed to help create the story too, don't let the game do all the heavy lifting in the department of imagination.

    • Roman von ungern-sternberg
      Roman von ungern-sternberg 2 months ago +11

@Han Solo (but I'm dead) the r in rpg stands for roll your roll effects the world, I felt this way back in dark souls as well. How much replay value would it add if your choices had real consequences? Both relatively instant ones like that faction aiding you and long term ones like the world being effected by your last play through helping one side? I know Iam not crazy when I talk about this since I swear a dynamic world reacting to your choices used to be fairly common.
I mean even bioshock had a little of this, I never felt like a better person than when I spared a woman who looked after my daughter and got her to second guess the Karen cult leader who tried to take full custody. She couldn’t call off “the family” and their bushwhack but she sent me some drones for back up and warned me. Little things like that really take things to another level.
“You had me under a gun... and yet you just walk away? No monster alive turns the other cheek. No monster does that. A thinking man does that. “

    • Pedro Miret
Pedro Miret 2 months ago +5

@Roman von ungern-sternberg Beyond how mind breakingly complicated it would be to do a world with this level of detail be everchanging in regards of the player completing certain quests...
There is an issue with map management, quest overlap and such.
If you change the world due to this quest, then you have to do the same for that of the age of frenzied flame, age of stars and such. You can do many of these at a time, and all of that going on would be a bit of a mess.
That and Deathroot is an essentially slow burning effect. It need not be automatic.

this video is on another level. ive been watching your channel for years and i must say the production value of these novels you and the others create is staggering. the perfect mixing of in game dialog with your script mixes in a way where even though they speak in a sort of backwards old english thats hard to understand the way its put in your story almost translates it for us. even though the character is silent the script and the environmental storytelling you created almost gave them a verbal script. i could hear the character speak which is just brilliant script writing. the music in the background was muted in the story telling but always there ever present. Only to swell and demand attention during the fight scenes. exquisite. Now the fight scenes itself are a masterpiece. you guys took a game that is famous for its difficulty and created beautifully choreographed movie scenes with it. Camera angles where perfect. (radagon death scene with him falling over had me out of my chair) the choreographing was impeccable, the scene sticking out most in my head was the ending fight with D setting it up as the protagonist on the back foot at the beginning, taking a swing as a spell is being cast making the viewer believe "oh! hes got the timing he'll interrupt the spell and gain ground in the fight!" only to have the spell go off first knocking our champion back. This creates perfect tension in the fight even for those who have played through this storyline on their own. Even though this is what i would describe as a documentary on Elden Rings story you guys turned it into a full blown movie and for me personally. This movie gets a 10/10. Simply amazing. Well done!

  • Just Some Jersey Devil With Internet Access

Ever since I started noticing parallels between Dark Souls and Elden Ring, I have had a Theory. A theory so crazy it might just be right. Hear me out, for there are two parts to this theory.
You See, there are many things that seem to imply Elden Ring to be a Prequel to Dark Souls 1; the title "The first of the dead" is shared by Nito, whose role as ruler over all death and impromptu king of the undead, mirrors that of the yet-to-be-reborn Godwyn. The Erdtree Burns here, and so the gods of Dark Souls find a Fire, deep beneath the earth, and within it the souls of lords... elden lords, perhaps? Giants and Dragons live across the lands between, and some giants dress surprisingly similar to those found in Lordran, even blacksmithing with their great strength, just like a giant in Anor Londo. The Basilisk Frogs of Deathblight that are found at the root of the erdtree, are also found, perhaps later, in the great hollow, the base and roots of a Giant Archtree, beside a lake filled with Ash... like would remain after the burning of the Erdtree, perhaps. The Dragons still roam across The Lands Between, and perhaps after the burning of the erdtree, the slow fall of the golden order, perhaps the dragons chose to rule once more in the fog. Perhaps these dragons were then slain by the gods of Dark Souls. The Serpent is Derided as a sign of avarice, and what do we have in Elden Ring, but a massive serpent, avaricious to the point of devouring even gods.
So many things line up if Elden Ring actually took place before Dark Souls, however, many other details seem to point towards the Opposite Conclusion, for there are many things that seem to suggest that Elden Ring takes place _after_ Dark Souls 3.
The Stray Demons of Dark Souls 3 are covered in roots and branches, nearly overgrown, and in Elden Ring the Erdtree Avatars ARE overgrown and seem to be the same beings, if empowered by the minor erdtrees. At the end of the hidden ending of DS3, the firekeeper says that lights will grow in the void, and what do we have in elden ring but a void with stars in it, the same void that spawned Astel, and the Fallingstar Beasts, possibly even Gravity Magic Itself. There's a cult in the far north of The Lands Between, which worships an Eclipse. not an eclipse like we would see in our world, but the Exact Same Bleeding Eclipse that we see in Dark Souls 3, its image a crest on shields oh so similar to those wielded by undead that once bore that mark on their chests. The design is Unmistakable, so if this didn't happen after the events of Dark Souls 3... how did it get there? The bridge-like highways of The Lands Between are oh so similar to those seen in Dark Souls 3 that it seems hardly a coincidence; down to the square indents in the sides every so often. The use of Crystals in Magic grew throughout the events of the Dark Souls Trilogy, from a niche technique barely harnessed by Seath the Scaleless, to something used by the Crystal mage, and thus seemingly more frequently. And what do we have in Elden Ring, but its full integration into common magic as the Glintstone Sorceries. Sister Friede's blackflame is now used by the Godskin Mages, The Chaos Flame requires linking like the fires of old, down to the motions required. The Serpent-men still exist, still by that name. Aldrich, devourer of gods, could very well have grown to a large, serpentine form. Perhaps The Greater Will found an archtree worthy of bearing its power.
My theory, however, pulls on both pools of evidence and a shared theme of Dark Souls and Elden Ring; The turning of an age, the turning of a cycle. What if the events of Elden Ring are just the other half of a cycle? One that repeats over and over again, just like the linking of the flame, one that starts in a formless age of fog when beings find the souls of lords among a fire, one that ends when the erdtree burns, and fog envelops the world once more... while the souls of lords smoulder beneath the ground, waiting to be found? And in the middle, an age of Darkness, after which stars dot the void.
Yet certain things stay the same, the flame can burn out of control, the void can corrupt, and the gods impose their will upon humanity, who worship blindly, even if some wish to shed that yolk.
This is my theory, take it as you will.

Great video, i never expected Fia to hold such significance and that her questline would give a whole new ending. Although it would've been better if you had mentioned something about the dusk/ gloam-eyed-queen; who originally wielded the power of destined death. So i hoped that she'd have some sort of significance in this ending or its outcome. I myself am quite confused about the subject and would appreciate if you made a video about your take on the topic.

the part where Rogier describes his friendship with D really gets me, especially when he says "But our paths since diverged. Never again to cross. Though that's hardly an uncommon fate for two friends".

    • Varsoon HKS
Varsoon HKS 2 months ago +41

D's a cool guy who hunts down the undead and Rogier started simping for a necrophiliac that glorified literally zombies and skeletons. It's a tale as old as time.

    • CursedUsername
      CursedUsername 2 months ago +12

@Varsoon HKS Rogier didn't really simp as much as he wanted to find out the truth and it turns out that following Fia was the best course of action.

    • Varsoon HKS
Varsoon HKS 2 months ago +27

@CursedUsername He's been entirely won over by her philosophy that the undead have done nothing wrong and don't deserve persecution and that having Fia gestate the mending rune will be a means of salvation for the undead. This is not a logical conclusion for anyone to come to. Rogier goes from being someone trying to discover the truth of deathroot, fighting the undead alongside D, to someone who has been indoctrinated to Fia's cause--so much so that he even dies a second death defending her at Godwin's corpse.
In more relatable terms, let's say you have a friend who you play basketball with and he's really into the history of the sport. One day he meets a woman who thinks basketball is racist and should be cancelled, so he stops hanging out with you, stops playing basketball, and commits his life to ending the sport. This woman is notoriously promiscuous and offers 'comfort' to those who side with her. Your friend dies in an anti-basketball rally. The woman who has convinced him of all of this then later finds and kills you. Was your friend
      1. Just a noble scholar of basketball history trying to find the truth
      or
      2. A good dude that was led astray by a hussie?
Sorry, man, Rogier simped for Fia and died chasing her nonsense cause.

    • Red Bone
Red Bone 2 months ago +10

@Varsoon HKS But Rogier and D wasn’t that kind of friends. They worked together, yes, but their motivation were ultimately different. One is a devout follower of the Golden Order and all that it stood for, while the other is a scholar who wishes to learn about Those Who Live In Death and the Night of the Black Knifes. Their path crossed due to the nature of their objectives, but it only made sense that they eventually went separate path.
And regarding your stance on Fia’s goal, have you watched the video? Fia’s goal was not to worship Those Who Live in Death, but to create an Age where Those Who Live in Death have the right to exist, and will have a purpose to live, unlike how they are in the current age, without purpose, goals, or really thought. Fia’s ending is simply give such thing to Those Who Live in Death by giving them a Lord to follow, because as a Deathbed Companion, it is in her belief that such beings has a right to such things. Now whether you agree or disagree with her belief and goal is up to you.
Personally speaking, the ending doesn’t really solve any of the inherent problems in the land Between making it an okay ending at best.

@Maximus Storm Simple; because there are other bosses as easy as the Tibia Mariner; Soldier of Godrick, Cemetary Shade, Trolls etc, but in DS1 Pinwheel is in a class of his own in terms of difficulty, making him stand out even more.
